Osamu and his wife went to a movie theater. They got good seats but it was too cold in there. Osamu’s wife had to use the restroom so Osamu had to save her seat. They didn’t bring anything so he could only save her seat with his hand. He was afraid that someone might try to sit there. If you don’t have anything on the chair beside you, someone will think it’s open and will try to sit there. If they try to sit down, you should say: “I’m sorry, this seat is saved.” Some people will ask you first: “Is this seat saved?” We save seats at concerts, movies, shows- anyplace where there is no reserved seating. Sometimes people are rude on the bus and will put their packages on the seat next to them. If it is obvious that no one will be sitting there, you may say: “May I sit here?”
家内が、一度、映画館へ行ってみたいと言い出しました。（Two for “Silence of the Lamb” please.／「羊達の沈黙」の切符を２枚下さい） ようやく切符を買い、丁度よい席に座ることができました。しかし、席についてからが大変でした。館内はクーラーの効き過ぎです。座って間もなく、家内がトイレに行きました。私達は軽装で来たものですから、席を確保するためのバッグなどを持っていません。片手で家内のシートを押さえつつ、人が通るたびに座って来ないか、あるいは、何か尋ねてこないかと、内心ヒヤヒヤの連続でした。
映画館で一緒に来た人のために席を確保することは、よくあることです。その映画が人気のあるものならば、なおのこと、色々な人がその席があいているかどうか尋ねてくることでしょう。あるいは、こちらが尋ねたくなる場合もあります。表現例をあげてみましょう。 映画館について一言 上映終了ごとに観客の入れ替えがあります。したがって上映開始時間は確認すべきでしょう。電話で確認する場合には、電話口から案内テープが流れてきます。切符売場、新聞などにも表示されています。飲食に関しては館内で購入したもの以外のものを持ち込むと、注意される場合があります。セーターもお忘れなく！
