Osamu went out from the hotel by himself. His wife stayed in the room. He took a walk on the beach then saw a beautiful sunset. He wanted to call his wife and tell her but he didn’t have a quarter. He couldn’t get change because he didn’t know how to ask. So he decided to just go back to the room. By then, she had missed the sunset.
If you need coins, you should ask for them by name. (quarters, dimes) “Can I have change in quarters?” or “Can I get change for a dollar?” Some small stores require you to buy something in order to get change. They will tell you, “No, I can’t give you change. You have to buy something first.” If you buy something small like a pack of gum, then they will give you small change. Pay phones in Hawaii are a quarter and you can talk as long as you want. You don’t pay by the time you talked. Nowadays, people like to use cellular phones more than pay phones because it’s more convenient.
家内を一人ホテルの部屋に残して散歩に出かけました。夕日があまりにも美しかったので、電話で家内を呼び出そうと考えました。公衆電話を使いたいのですが、手元にはドル紙幣しかなく、２５セント硬貨への両替もままならず、また、ホテルへの電話のかけ方もおぼつかなくて、やむなくトコトコ部屋へ立ち戻る次第となりました。
