コーヒーを召し上がりますか。
Osamu and his wife went to a fancy restaurant and the waitress asked them if they wanted more coffee. Even though he couldn't understand the whole sentence, he knew what she was saying by her kind attitude. He always said "no, thank you" to every question but this time he wanted to say something different. He wanted to say something formal. He said "No thank you, I'm enough." The waitress understood him but made a strange face. Unless you go to a Japanese restaurant, most people can't speak Japanese and they will have a hard time understanding your foreign pronunciation.
家内とちょっと洒落たレストランへ行った時のことです。ウエイトレスは、「コーヒーをもう少しいかがですか？」と尋ねてきました。言葉のすべては分からなくても、心地良い対応は内容を伝えてくれます。私は、”No, thank you!” と馬鹿の一つ覚えを繰り返すのも面白くないと思い、「ありがとう、でも充分です。」と少し気取った気持ちで、”No, thank you, I’m enough.” と答えました。ウエイトレスは意味は分かったものの、少し怪訝な表情を見せました。
こんな言葉のやり取りで思い出すことがあります。私の友人がこぼしていたのです。Do you like coffee? と聞かれたので、Yes, I do.と答えたところ、飲みたくもないコーヒーを用意されて困ったと・・・。相手の方がどんな質問をされたかはわかりませんが、一般的に、「コーヒーが好きですか？」という場合には、Do you like coffee? と言います。「コーヒーを召し上がりますか？」という場合には、Would you like some coffee? となります。I’m enough.については、これでもおっしゃりたいことを推察することはできます。しかし、聞いた時、少し奇異な感じがします。I’ve had enough. と言うのが文法的に正しく自然な表現です。しかし、No, thank you. と言うだけで充分に丁寧な断わり方です。
（コーヒーを）もう少しいかがですか？
Would you like some (more coffee)?
いいえ、結構です。（充分に頂戴しました）
No, thank you. (I’ve had enough.)
I´m fine, thank you.
