永久に。
When the day to leave the U.S. was getting closer, Osamu told his American friend that he was leaving soon. He said he was going back to Japan in a few days. His friend was surprised and asked him, “For good?” But Osamu didn’t understand what he meant. He thought for good things. Osamu was embarrassed that his friend thought that he wanted to go back soon. But actually, Osamu wanted to stay in the U.S. as long as he could. He thought his friend made a mistake.

日本へ帰国する日も間近に迫ってきたので、当地で知り合ったアメリカの友人に、そのことを伝えました。 I’ll go back to Japan in a few days. すると彼は、少し驚いた様子で、For good? と問い返してきました。しかし、友人の質問の意味が分かりません。良いことのために・・・？？？ハワイには、一日でも長く滞在したいと思っているのに、私が日本に帰りたがっていると勘違いされたのかと、一瞬あわてました。

あなたの友人はあなたが長期滞在なさっているので、ここに定住している人と勘違いされたのかも知れませんね。ところで、For good という表現は、「永久に、これを最後に」といった意味です。アメリカで永住権(green card）をとると、I’m going to be living in the U.S. for good. ということになりますね。

彼は行ってしまったの？

そう、永久に。
