What day of the week do you have off? Osamu asked his friend when his holiday was. The friend thought he meant his vacation. it was confusing. Osamu just wanted to know what was his free day.
アメリカの方と、たどたどしいやりとりでしたが話をする機会を持ちました。その人は日曜日も働いていらっしゃるようなので、何曜日がお休みなのだろうと思い、 When is your holiday? と尋ねました。しかし、彼は少し戸惑った表情で、You mean my vacation? と聞き返してきました。
英語で holiday と言った場合、通常、土曜、日曜の休日は含まれません。もっとも、「毎日曜日休みます」という意味で、I have a holiday every Sunday. と言っても理解はできます。しかし、 I'm off every Sunday. の方が、私にとって耳に自然に響きます。 ところで、 It's my day off. は、仕事のない日、休日を意味しますが、 I'm having an off day. と言えば、調子の悪い日、元気のでない日を意味します。
