Are you originally from here? When you talk to people in Hawaii, it's strange to ask "Are you American?" because everyone is American- just different ethnicities and origins. There are other good sentences you can use: Were you born here? Are you from here? Are you originally from here? Where were you born? Where are you originally from?
私の友人にアジア系のアメリカ人がいます。先日、その人が少し不愉快な顔をして話してくれました。日本の人の中には、 ¨Are you American?¨ などと真面目な顔をして尋ねてくる人がいるというのです。悪気はないのだろうけれど、アメリカ人としての誇りを傷つけられたようで嫌な感じだったということでした。
アメリカにはいろいろな国からいろいろな人が来ています。このような質問の仕方は、やはり適当ではありませんね。一方、その方の生まれ故郷などを尋ねると、もっと楽しくスムーズな会話が生まれるかもしれません。アメリカでは生まれた後、いろいろな所に引っ越している人も多くいます。参考例の質問に対しては、次のような返答が返ってくるかもしれません。 "I was born in Ohio but my family moved to New York when I was 2. So I grew up there."
