Willows don't break under the weight of the snow
Japanese Proverb
When it snows, snow accumulates on the branches of trees. Trees with strong but rigid branches can support a lot of weight, but if the weight becomes too much they will break. The willow tree has flexible branches. When the snow accumulates, they bend so that the snow falls off. They may not be able to bear as much weight, but they don't have to. In order to survive in life, you need to be like the willow. You will inevitably encounter forces stronger than you. You need to be able to bend under the weight of your burdens and let them fall right off you. However, you still need to be strong enough to snap back into place.

私はアメリカ人浪人（さむらい）、日本から遠く離れて生を受けた日系３世です。私は日本を訪ねる機会があるとは考えてもいませんでした。しかし、最近、戻ったのです。戻る、というのは、たとえ、あなたがそこに行ったことがなくても、あなたの一部が、いつもそこにいるということです。ある日、私は東京の町を歩きまわり、わき道を下りていきました。すると、突然、神社が現われました。あまりに突然のことで、驚くというより、咲いている花を思いがけず見ているような穏やかな気分でした。それは、どこからともなく立ち現われてきたかのようでした。ここ、都会のど真ん中に、それは出現したのです。古い何かが、周辺の新しいものに飲み込まれずに存在していました。

I’m an American ronin, the third generation born away from Japan. I never though that I would have the opportunity to visit Japan, but recently I returned. I say return because a piece of you is always there even if you’ve never been there. One day, walking through Japan, we went down a side street. Suddenly a shrine appeared. Not so sudden as to frighten, but gentle like seeing a flower blossom unexpectedly. It seemed to open up from nowhere. Here, in the middle of the city, it appeared. Something of the old that wasn’t consumed by the new things around it.

I’m an American ronin, the third generation born away from Japan. I never though that I would have the opportunity to visit Japan, but recently I returned. I say return because a piece of you is always there even if you’ve never been there. One day, walking through Japan, we went down a side street. Suddenly a shrine appeared. 私の叔父さんとひいおばあさん（曾祖母）の身に起こった、気味の悪いお化けのお話です。それは、ハワイ、マウイ島のラハイナで起こりました。当時、叔父は、まだ小さくて、おそらく、５才か６才ぐらいでした。ある夜、叔父は曾祖母と家路を急いでいました。二人は、少しでも早く家に着くために、墓地を通り抜ける近道を選びました。歩いている間、叔父は、曾祖母に、誰かが付いてくると言い出しました。そこで、二人は速度をあげ、足早に歩きました。しかし、後ろにいる人も同じように足早に歩き出します。気味悪く思った曾祖母は、歩く速度を落とし、うつむきながら振り返り、「先に、行きなさい！」と大声を出しました。叔父はその人が通り過ぎる時、その人の顔を見上げました。その人の顔には、目も鼻も口もなく、のっぺらぼうでした。叔父は曾祖母のスカートを引っ張って、今、見たことを伝えました。二人は、大急ぎで家路を急ぎました。そんな出来事があった後、曾祖母は重い病気になりました。そして、再び、よくなることはありませんでした。マウイ島には、たくさんお化けの話があります。このお話は、私の家族に実際に起こった話です。
This is a family story that has been pasted down to us by my mother. One evening, my uncle who was very little maybe 5 or 6 years old, was walking home with my great grandmother in Lahaina. To get home faster they would take a short cut through the grave. While they were walking, my uncle told my great grandmother that someone was following them. So they sped up and walked faster, but the person walked faster too! My great grandmother got angry and slowed down, turned around and gruffly said, ” Hai, ikenasai!” And as the person passed by, my uncle looked up but saw no face on the person. And he shook great grandma’s skirt and told her what he saw. Then they quickly rushed home. Ever since that incidence, my great grandmother became very sick and never got well, again. Maui has many ghost stories, but this one has actually happened to our family.
