A conversation between a patient and a doctor about Hemophilus influenza B (HIB)
Patient:
The long summer vacation has begun. Kids in Hawaii are spending days filled with sports activities or in summer school. Children’s health is every parent’s concern. Nowadays, I hear names of diseases, such as HIB and HBV, that I think we hardly cared about before. Can you explain what they are?

長い夏休みに入って、ハワイの子供達はスポーツに興じたり、サマー・スクールに参加するなどしてそれぞれに充実した毎日を過ごしているように見えます。子供の健康は、すべての親にとって気にかかるところです。このところ、HIB, HBVなど、以前には問題にならなかった病気の話を耳にします。説明していただけますか？

Doctor:
HIB is an abbreviation of Hemophilus Influenza type B. Before reaching 5 years old, 1 out of 200 children is said to have this influenza, which causes pneumonia, meningitis and inflammation of blood, joints and the heart. Fortunately, the disease can be prevented by receiving HIB vaccine.

HBV is an abbreviation of Hepatitis B virus, or the virus that causes hepatitis B, which is transmitted through blood contaminated with HBV. Thus, mother-to-child transmission is regarded as an important problem. Approximately 2 hundred million people worldwide are said to be carriers. Hepatitis B can become chronic hepatitis, then, cirrhosis and cancer of the liver. Vaccination of HBV is strongly recommended for children.

HIBは、Haemophilus Influenza type B の略で、B型インフルエンザ菌という細菌のことです。５歳に達するまでに、２００人に１人は、この感染症にかかるといわれており、肺炎、随膜炎、また血液、関節、心臓などの炎症を起こします。幸い、HIBワクチンの接種を受けることで予防できます。

HBVは、Hepatitis B Virusの略で、B型肝炎ウイルスのことです。B型肝炎は、HBVを含む血液により感染しますが、感染した妊婦から胎児への感染（母子感染）が重要視されています。世界中で何と２億人が、このウイルスのキャリヤーといわれており、B型肝炎は、将来、慢性肝炎、更に、肝硬変、肝癌に移行する場合もありますから、お子さんの予防接種をぜひおすすめします。
