A conversation between a patient and a doctor about pregnancy
Patient:
I received a lot of greeting cards over Christmas and the New Year. Some of these were cards from friends and acquaintances informing me of expecting births or births of new babies. There must be women who are in the same situation for the first time overseas. What are English expressions that will be helpful to them?

クリスマス・シーズンから年末年始にかけて、たくさんのカードをいただきました。その内、知人、友人から出産の予定、誕生の知らせが何通かありました。そこで、今回は、海外ではじめて、そのような体験をなさる方のために知っておきたい便利な表現を教えていただきましょう。

Doctor:
It surely is worrisome to give birth at a place away from home and friends. Fortunately, more than a few people in Hawaii know Japanese, and that makes the situation a lot easier. But, if you know some English expressions, however simple, it will certainly be helpful, especially when you have to go to the hospital at night, and there is nobody who understands Japanese. In Hawaii, just about everything needed for birthing and newborn babies is provided at the hospital, including diapers and a nursing bottle. You don’t have to bring them with you.

家族、知人から離れた土地での出産は不安なものです。幸いハワイは日本語の分かる人がいますから、多少とも助かりますが、簡単な英語の表現を知っておくと、夜中に病院に行かねばならない時などに全く意志が通じないよりもずっと良いと思います。ハワイの病院では、妊婦は、勿論、新生児のために、おしめ、哺乳ビン、全て準備してありますから、それらを持って行く必要はありません。
