A conversation between a patient and a doctor about glaucoma
Patient:
My mother was diagnosed of having glaucoma. What are the treatment options for glaucoma?
母が緑内障と診断されました。治療法としてはどのようなものがありますか。
Doctor:
Glaucoma occurs when the drainage of aqueous humor (liquid inside the eye) is hindered, resulting in the damage of the optic nerve. In general, the intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) is elevated, but the pressure is normal in some cases. It is important to consult with an ophthalmologist, when you notice that your field of vision is getting narrow. Medical treatment uses topical eye drops to lower the intraocular pressure. Laser treatment is employed to improve the drainage of aqueous humor. If neither medical treatment nor laser therapy fails to improve the pressure, surgical treatment is implemented.
緑内障は、眼内液の流通に支障がおき、それが原因となって視神経がおかされる病気です。眼内圧の上昇していることが一般にいわれますが、眼内圧が正常な場合もあります。視野が狭くなったと自覚されたら眼科医に相談されることが重要です。内科的治療法として、点眼液により眼内圧を下げます。又、レーザー治療により、眼内液の流出を改善することが出来ます。内科的にもレーザー療法によっても眼内圧が改善しない場合は、外科的な治療が行われます。
