As we all know, bad effects of smoking on our health have been studied in detail with both smokers themselves and people around them, including pets (passive smoking), and have found that smoking causes cancers of the lung, esophagus and cardiovascular disorders. It has been confirmed that nicotine induces smoking addiction. Smoking during pregnancy is associated with not only low birth weight but also infant deaths. Drugs that help smokers to quit smoking in the form of pills and skin patches are now familiar. Smoking cessation produces a decrease in mortality. Studies found that the younger the age of smoking cessation is, the better the decreases in the mortality are.

煙草の健康に及ぼす悪影響については、喫煙者本人は勿論のこと、ペットを含めた周囲の者（passive smoking）についても詳しく研究されていることはご存じの通りです。肺、食道ガンを始めとして、心血管系も障害することが明らかになっています。ニコチンが常習癖の原因であることも確認されています。さらに妊娠中の喫煙は、新生児の出生時の低体重ばかりでなく、幼小児の死亡とともに関連づけられています。禁煙の手助けをする薬（経口薬や皮膚に貼布するパッチ薬）も今やおなじみになりました。禁煙の結果は死亡率の減少として現れますが、禁煙をする年齢が若ければ若いほど良好な結果がでています。
